hotels and care homes in Bridlington have been sold, with property experts saying demand for seaside investment opportunities remains strong.
Eleven properties in the town, along with three in Scarborough, have been sold by Watling Real Estate.
The Bridlington portfolio includes well-known former businesses such as the Spinnaker Hotel on Pembroke Terrace, Brentwood House Hotel on Princess Street, Mont Millais on Trinity Road, Park View Hotel on Tennyson Avenue and Victoria House on Victoria Road. Former guest houses Vernon Villa, Acomb House, Blantyre Guest House and Ashford House have also changed hands, along with two former Pentrich House properties on Vernon Road.

Reprieve As Bridlington Care Unit Closure Is Postponed
A eleventh-hour decision has halted the closure of the Bridlington Care Unit, which was scheduled to shut its doors on Monday.
On Friday, the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust announced a pause on the controversial plans following immense pressure from local residents, councillors, and Bridlington’s Member of Parliament, Charlie Dewhirst.
The ward at Bridlington Hospital, established in 2021 to ease pandemic-related pressures at Scarborough Hospital, has served as a vital bridge between hospital and home for patients from Bridlington, Driffield, Hornsea, and Whitby.
Health chiefs had previously maintained that a pause would not be in the best interests of patients or staff, citing a strategic shift towards community-based care and the withdrawal of pandemic-era funding. However, an intense community campaign has forced a change of course.
Seafest marks Bridlington’s maritime heritage
You are invited to celebrate Bridlington’s maritime heritage next weekend.
Seafest includes demonstrations of seafaring skills, coastal traditions and local seafood. Visitors can also meet RNLI crew.
You will be able to visit the marine mammal rescue team display and learn how seals and other sea mammals are looked after when they are in trouble.
The free event will be held at Bridlington RNLI lifeboat station on 6 June from 10:00 until 16:00 BST.
Meanwhile, Bridlington RNLI has reminded people heading to the water to keep a close eye on children and stick to safe areas.
Morrisons closing stores across the UK with hundreds of jobs at risk
Morrisons is reportedly set to close 100 stores across the UK, in a move that could cost hundreds of jobs.
The supermarket began consulting staff affected by the proposals on Thursday, according to industry magazine The Grocer.
Affected stores, which are all Morrisons Daily branches, are expected to shut over the next few months, with the supermarket looking to move employees to other stores “where possible.”
The news comes despite convenience being an area of targeted growth by the retailer, with CEO Rami Baitiéh setting the aim of opening hundreds of Morrisons Daily stores over the next few years.
Mike Heslop-Mullens takes over as Bridlington Mayor
Cllr Heslop-Mullens’ charity for the year will be the Spotlight Theatre, which is based on West Street in Bridlington.
He takes over from Councillor Angela Walker.
The new deputy mayor for the forthcoming year will be Councillor Rick Arrand.
During her mayoral year 2025/26, outgoing mayor, Councillor Angela Walker, and her Consort Graham Walker, have been raising funds for her two chosen charities: New Pasture Lane Community Centre – The Bread Shed, and MND Association Yorkshire Coast.
These are two organisations close to her heart. She also chose to donate funds to two local theatre groups, Harbourside Theatre Group and Spotlight Theatre, as a thank you for their excellent contributions to the local community.
Doncaster Sheffield Airport is on the path to reopening with new loan and first big jet landing
‘Abandoned’ Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA), which closed in 2022, is on the path to reopening.
This week, it was revealed that a £57 million loan from Doncaster Council to support the reopening has been approved.
The news comes after a row over the loan between Labour and Reform UK councillors was resolved in a May 11 council meeting.
And late last month, on April 28, the first large jet landed at the airport since its closure nearly four years ago. A Boeing 727 paid a rare visit to the site, its former home in the north of England.
Staff said the arrival of the jet, which is kept on constant standby as a response aircraft to oil spills around the world, was an ‘amazing moment’ for aviation and for the community.
Boeing 727s are on-call 24/7, 365 days, and can be deployed anywhere in the world at short notice.

UK digital driving licence changes ‘full rollout’ confirmed – here’s what it means
Driving licence changes are being launched this year – which will see digital ID introduced for millions. Labour Party Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander described the technology as a “game changer”.
Ms Alexander confirmed that digital driving licences would be introduced in January last year as part of the new GOV.UK App. The Labour Party has confirmed that there would be a “full rollout later in the year”. The Transport Secretary described the new technology as a “game changer for the millions of people who use their driving licence as ID”. Peter Kyle, who was Science Secretary at the time, said: “GOV.UK Wallet will mean that every letter or identity document you receive from the government could be issued to you virtually.
“For people who choose to use GOV.UK Wallet, they will find it easier to prove they’re entitled to benefits or check their age when buying alcohol or DIY equipment, with more security and trust than ever before.
“Crucially, it also opens huge opportunities to make interacting with public services much easier by putting people in control of their own data.”, reports Birmingham Live.

Plans to close Community Unit at Bridington Hospital revealed
Plans to close Bridlington Community Unit, which provides elderly care, would result in the ‘worst possible outcome for patients and staff’, Unite, the UK’s leading union, said today.
York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has written to more than 50 impacted staff announcing consultations on the proposed closure.
The cost cutting measures would result in elderly patients being transferred to Scarborough, with nurses and healthcare assistants facing redundancy or transfer to York or Scarborough.
As well as leaving Bridlington without vital health services, the closure would rack up huge costs as patients would need to be transferred back and forth from Scarborough by taxi.
Shutting down the ward would also cause huge pressure on Scarborough Hospital, which is already facing crippling bed shortages.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “These disastrous plans would result in the worst possible outcome for patients and staff. The short-term savings would not outweigh the long terms costs and are further evidence of York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals treating Bridlington’s health services as a poor relation. Unite stands firm in demanding the trust rows back.”
Bin rule changes that will affect all households in England this April
From next month, households across England will see changes to their bin collections as the government rolls out new recycling rules aimed at streamlining waste sorting.
The switch-up is part of a broader initiative to make it simpler for residents to manage their rubbish and gain a clearer understanding of what can and cannot be recycled. Under the forthcoming “Simpler Recycling” regulations, which kick in from March 31, all local councils in England will be obliged to collect four distinct types of waste separately. In practical terms, this means households will have four separate bins or containers for different kinds of rubbish, although some areas may already have such systems in place.
Waste collectors will be tasked with collecting food and garden waste, paper and card, other dry recyclable materials like glass and plastic, and non-recyclable waste that can’t be processed and will instead be dispatched to landfill or used for energy recovery, the Manchester Evening News reports.
These separate collections must be made available to all households, including residents of flats and apartment blocks, ensuring the regulations apply universally – regardless of property type.
While the change will impact councils throughout England, not every household will experience significant differences immediately. Some local authorities already run recycling schemes that largely align with the new requirements, meaning residents in these areas may see minimal change.
However, for many others it could result in new bins being rolled out or alterations to current collection timetables as councils adapt to the revised rules.
The Maltings, a luxury care facility based on Jewison Lane near Bridlington, officially opens its doors
A long-abandoned building in Bridlington has been transformed into a luxury care facility after an £8 million redevelopment, creating around 100 jobs in the local area.
The Maltings care home on Jewison Lane in Sewerby was officially opened on Friday, 6 March by local MP Charlie Dewhirst, following investment from Fisher Care Group.
The site had stood partially built and empty for several years before the family-run company acquired the shell structure and completed the development.
The 59-bed facility will provide residential, dementia and respite care and is expected to welcome its first residents on 9 March. The opening also coincides with Fisher Care Group’s 40th anniversary, marking four decades since the company was founded in 1986 by the late John Fisher.
Newly appointed care home manager Rob Hall, who has 26 years of experience in health and social care across East Yorkshire, said the new home would help local families keep relatives close to their community.
“Bridlington families have told us they need high-quality local care options so their relatives can stay near the area they know,” he said.
The Maltings includes 59 en-suite bedrooms with air conditioning and monitoring technology designed to detect falls and early health changes. Facilities also include dementia-friendly spaces, landscaped gardens, an orangery, cinema room, bistro-style dining area with bar, and an on-site hair salon.
Solar carport works set for ER Leisure at Bridlington and other centres
Construction work to install new solar carports will lead to temporary car park disruption at Bridlington and several East Riding Leisure (ERL) centres over the coming months.
The improvement works, which form part of wider sustainability plans, will mean that some parking spaces are unavailable while construction is under way, although the centres will remain open as normal.
The works will take place at ERL Bridlington between 19 January and 6 March, ERL Hornsea from 2 February to 20 March,, and ERL Driffield between 12 March and 8 May.
During these periods, customers are advised to allow extra time for their visits and to follow any temporary signage or instructions on site.
An East Riding of Yorkshire Council spokesperson said: “We appreciate that any disruption to parking can be inconvenient for our customers, and we would like to thank everyone for their patience while these works take place. The installation of solar carports is an important investment that supports our commitment to reducing carbon emissions and improving our facilities for the future.”
ERYC approves new Bridlington retirement development
Plans for a new development housing 15 retirement apartments in Bridlington have been approved by East Riding Council.
The development will be built on St John Street.
A building on the site formerly housed West Building Supplies Ltd.
Submitted documents show an image believed to be taken in the late 19th or early 20th century of the building. The image shows a sign on the building which reads “Priory Church Institute, 1884.”
Developers initially hoped to build a site capable of housing 26 apartments in a three-storey block. Plans explain that after feedback from planning officers the concept was scaled back.
The revised and now approved, plans are for 15 one-bed units in a two-storey building. The building is to be L-shaped with a courtyard in the centre.
The apartments will be available to those over 60 years old. The site will include landscaped areas and car parking provision next to the courtyard. Access to the car park comes directly from St John Street itself.
The granting of the planning permission has included the signing of an S106 agreement. The developer will pay the sum of £146,100 in an affordable housing contribution, among other payments.
Next stages approved for 84 bed hotel at Bridlington golf course
Final aspects of the project have now been approved
Councillors on East Riding Council’s planning committee have approved additional plans for a 84 bedroom hotel at a Bridlington golf course. The scale, layout, and access to the hotel were approved over three years ago but the application returned to the committee this month to allow for councillors to iron out some final aspects of the project. In April 2022, councillors backed plans for the hotel to be constructed at Links Golf Course on Flamborough Road, Sewerby. At the time, the issues of landscaping and the hotel’s appearance were not concluded upon. The plans add: “Because of the site’s prominent setting on the historic North Yorkshire coastline, it has been important to ensure the development hits the right note in terms of design and quality of finish. As well as this, the setting within the immediate context of the golf course needs to ensure the development has its own identity, but be carefully considered to sit comfortably alongside the existing clubhouse.”

Lobster sculpture installed at Bridlington Harbour
The three-metre woven steel artwork, created by Yorkshire artist Emma Stothard, was gifted to the town by Hudson Contract as a tribute to Bridlington’s fishing heritage.
Lesley Jackson, owner of Hudson Contract, said: “I first saw this sculpture in Emma Stothard’s studio in Whitby and absolutely loved it.
“I said then it should be displayed in the lobster capital of Europe, and here it is.
“I am delighted to have been able to make this gift to my hometown of Bridlington.”
Bridlington Harbour lands more shellfish than any other port on the European continent, with the majority exported worldwide.
The sculpture was unveiled at a ceremony attended by Luke Campbell, mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire, Charlie Dewhirst MP, Anne Handley, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Angela Walker, Bridlington town mayor, and Neil Orum, chairman of the Harbour Commissioners.
The RNLI’s Lifeboat Station in Bridlington is looking for volunteers to join the existing All Weather Lifeboat Crew team.
The team, which operates from Bridlington’s south side, is also hoping to attract people who are willing to join the All Weather Lifeboat SHORE Crew. The volunteer crews are the backbone of the lifeboat service, saving lives at sea. The All Weather Lifeboat Crew role will help the RNLI save lives at sea by ensuring that its lifeboats are in a state of permanent readiness and crewing the lifeboat on service and exercise, under the command of the coxswain.
“All boat and shore crew follow the RNLI’s national Competency Based Training Scheme and respond to pagers when there is a request to launch the lifeboats.”

Meeting outlines future of health services in Bridlington
The Chair of the Bridlington Health Forum (BHF), Dr Anthony Clarke, has praised local leaders and residents following a public panel event held recently at the Spa to discuss the future of health services in the town.
The panel included Conservative MP Charlie Dewhirst; Simon Cox, Place Director for the East Riding at the Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB); Martin Barkley, Chair of York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust; Andy Kingdom, Director of Public Health at ERYC; and Cllr Andy Walker of Bridlington South.
The forum heard emotional testimonies from Bridlington residents about their personal experiences of healthcare in the town, which campaigners say underline the urgent need for a Bridlington Health Improvement Plan.
The ICB has now committed to developing a plan covering a wide range of services, including prevention, primary care, dentistry, hospital care, diagnostics, rehabilitation, social care and mental health. Progress will be monitored through the Bridlington Multi-Agency Meeting, where forum representatives will scrutinise the delivery of each area of the plan.
However, while welcoming the commitment, the BHF says it will continue to push for clearer targets and timescales to ensure improvements are delivered at pace.
Bridlington to receive £20 million investment from newly announced Pride in Place Programme
The leader of East Riding Council has welcomed the Government’s decision to invest in two East Riding towns. Bridlington and Withernsea will each receive £20 million of investment from the Government’s newly announced Pride in Place Programme.
The Government hopes the funding will help restore pride and community cohesion in overlooked areas. Areas in Hull have also been included in the programme.
A Government report on the programme explains that where the funding is to be spent will be decided by “a Neighbourhood Board, led by an independent Chair, that includes residents, local businesses, civil society and community organisations, working in partnership with their respective local authority.” The local authority in this case would be East Riding Council.
13-room hotel in Bridlington town centre approved
A property on Prince Street in Bridlington town is centre is to become a 13-room hotel have been given the green light.
ERYC has approved plans to changes to a number of properties on Prince Street in Bridlington.
The application pertains to numbers 4, 5, 6, and 7 Prince Street. Number 7, which formed part of the town’s Marks and Spencer store, part of which has been vacant since the closure of the store in 2018.
The approved planning application includes turning the upper floors of numbers 6 and 7 into a thirteen room hotel which would be accessed from an existing door on Prince Street.
Bridlington’s new £15.5m multi storey car park
Construction is underway on Bridlington’s new 426-space multi-storey car park sited on Beck Hill in Bridlington.
Contractor for the build, Henry Boot Construction, has commenced foundation work on the multi-storey car park in Bridlington – a key project within the town’s wider regeneration strategy.
Beck Hill is located between Manor Street and Hilderthorpe Road in the town centre, the car park will feature 426 spaces and be owned and operated by East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
When completed developers say there will be 31 accessible parking bays, six EV charging bays, eight motorcycle bays, and 12 cycle spaces, the development is said to help to futureproof the area’s parking needs and encourage sustainable transport options.
In preparation for construction, Henry Boot Construction is undertaking demolition and civil engineering works, including the diversion of the existing Gypsey Race – a key milestone that will enable the project to move forward. The multi-storey car park forms part of a long-term regeneration strategy for Bridlington, aiming to revitalise the town centre, attract investment, and futureproof local infrastructure.
This new multi-storey car park will not only address current parking challenges but also support the town’s regeneration by making it easier for people to visit, shop, and enjoy everything Bridlington has to offer for years to come”.
